Atâr – This market town is the place where the nomads of the north come to eat, drink and be merry.

Nouâdhibou – This is a fishing town situated on a peninsula jutting from the mainland. It is a swimmers, water-skiers and anglers paradise and the sea there boasts one of the largest fish populations in the world.

Nouakchott – The National Museum will give useful and an interesting introduction to the lifestyle and culture of the nomads of Mauritania.

The National Carpet Office is also worth a visit where women can be seen making hand-knotted rugs.

Arguin Bank National Park – This park is the crossroads for aquatic birds migrating from Africa, Europe and Asia. Many species also use the park for breeding. Bird viewing is best done by small boat and permission has to be obtained from the national parks service.

Koumbi Saleh – This is the legendary capital of the medieval empire of Ghana and is Mauritania’s most famous archaeological site. Evidence unearthed lends weight to the idea that this was possibly the biggest city in the world at that time.
